Santa Maria Maggiore houses part of the actual manger where the Baby Jesus was laid in Bethlehem—the same wooden boards that cradled our infant Savior! Above the altar, there is the famous icon of Our Lady known as Salus Populi Romani—the Protectress of the Roman People—believed to have been painted by Saint Luke.
